Life

Dennis D. Burgess lies in grave M20 of the Prescott Post lot. His stone names his unit as Company I of the 117th U.S. Colored Infantry, and gives his death as July 16, 1899. [1]

The stone's "117th Ken. Col. Tps." is the 117th U.S. Colored Infantry, raised in Kentucky. No Dennis Burgess was found in the index for that regiment; the spelling on his service record may differ. [2]

A 2022 list of Civil War veterans buried at North Burial Ground gives his death as 1899. [3]

His service record, any pension file, and his life before and after the war have not yet been researched. This page will grow as the records are read.
