Life

Charles H. Stratford lies in grave D10 of the Prescott Post lot. The plot survey records his stone as naming his unit as Company D of the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. No date of death has been read from the stone. [1]

The National Park Service's index of Civil War soldiers, which files the 14th Rhode Island under its later name, the 11th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery, lists Stafford, Charles H., 11th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery, Company B, private in and out, microfilm M589 roll 82. [2] The survey sheet read the name as Stratford; the index, the PV001 list and Chenery's errata have Stafford. The sheet and the PV001 list put him in Company D, the index card in Company B. Both questions are for the stone and the service record.

He appears in the roster of the regiment's 1898 history, page 172 (errata). [3]

A 2022 list of Civil War veterans buried at North Burial Ground gives his death as 1911. [4]

His service record, any pension file, and his life before and after the war have not yet been researched. This page will grow as the records are read.
