ISAAC GRANDY
Corporal, Co. A, 38th U.S. Colored Infantry. Minister. Born Camden County, North Carolina, about 1844. Died Providence, November 28, 1922.
Awaiting a second reader. Revised November 1, 2026.

The stone reads
ISAAC GRANDY
Co. A. 38. N.Y. Col. Troops
Died Nov. 28 1922
White marble, lying nearly flat and tilted, the lettering darkened by soil or residue. Legible. The first letters of lines 1 and 2 are worn at the edge. Photograph IMG_0819 (B. Brennan). [1]
The stone and the Army's records agree on the name, the company and the number 38, and disagree on the state. The stone carves "N.Y." Every card in his service record, the pension index and the Army's own cross-reference say "U.S. Col'd Infantry," and the regiment was raised at Norfolk, Virginia. [2][9] Nothing in his file connects him to New York. The error is on the stone, and its origin is not known. The stone also omits his rank. [2]
Life
Isaac Grandy was born in Camden County, North Carolina, in the early 1840s, to Edward, called Ned, and Amy Grandy. [3][11][15]
On January 5, 1864, at Norfolk, Virginia, he enlisted in Captain Clapp's company of the 1st Eastern Virginia Colored Infantry, which became Company A of the 38th U.S. Colored Infantry. He was twenty, a farmer. [2] He was sick in hospital at Portsmouth that spring and on fatigue duty at Point of Rocks the next winter. He was made a corporal and mustered out at Indianola, Texas, on January 25, 1867. [2]
On September 2, 1869, at Portsmouth, a widower at twenty-seven, he married Lizzie Weston, a widow. [3] In 1870 he was a huckster; his son Peter, born in 1863, lived with them. [4]
By 1880 they were in Providence, at the rear of 105 Meeting Street, he a laborer, she a laundress. [5][6] In 1881 he opened a savings account; the clerk noted that he could write. [7] By 1885 the state census called him a clergyman. [8] In 1888 he applied for an invalid pension. [9]
In 1900 he was a widower and a minister in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and sat with its pastors when they formed an Anti-Saloon League. [10][22] In 1901 he was minister of the A.M.E. church in Lee, Massachusetts, where on March 28 he married Sarah F. Brown, born Taylor, a widow from Fall River. [11] In 1904 her daughter Caroline, ten, died at Plainville, Connecticut. [23] By 1910 he had a church in Meriden. He buried parishioners, spoke in the schools on Memorial Day, and told a church audience about his war. [12][24][25][26]
By 1916 he had retired to Providence. [13] In 1920 he owned the house at 32 Superior Street. [14] He died there on November 28, 1922. Sarah applied for a widow's pension eight days later, and died in the same house in 1942. [9][15][28]

What we don't know
- His birth year. Twelve records give ages or years that fall between 1842 and 1847: age 20 at enlistment in January 1864; 27 at marriage in 1869 and in the 1870 census; 36 in 1880; "born 1843" in his own bank signature of 1881; 40 in 1885; "Aug. 1846," 53, in 1900; 54 in 1901; 65 in 1910; 69 in 1916; 74 in 1920; "August 29," age 80, at death. Two records put the birthday in August. The pension file should settle it. [2]–[15]
- His first wife. In 1869 he was already a widower. His son Peter was born in June 1863, before Isaac enlisted. Peter's 1942 death certificate first gave the mother's name as Mary, then corrected it to Elizabeth; the 1880 census says Peter's mother was born in Virginia, as Elizabeth was. Whether Peter was Elizabeth's son or a first wife's is open. [3][5][18]
- Whether he was born enslaved. No record seen says so either way.
- Where Elizabeth died. She was alive in Providence in 1885; he was a widower by June 1900. [8][10]
- His churches. He was a clergyman by 1885, minister of the A.M.E. church in Lee in 1901, and had a church in Meriden by 1910; the Bridgeport, Plainville and Meriden churches are not named. Sarah's 1942 funeral was at Winter Street A.M.E. Zion, Providence. [8][10][11][12][23][28]
- Caroline. The 1900 census called Caroline E. Brown, born July 1893, his granddaughter and Sarah's child; the 1904 notice called her his daughter. She was Sarah's daughter by her first marriage. Her death is not yet found in Connecticut records. [10][23]
- His G.A.R. post. In 1911 he took part in Meriden G.A.R. observances as one of the old soldiers. Whether he belonged to the Meriden post, or to a post in Providence, is not yet documented. [25][26]
- The pension file. The index gives the numbers (invalid application 683051, certificate 449779, filed from Massachusetts, 28 Dec. 1888; widow's application 1197640, certificate 949404, filed from Rhode Island, 6 Dec. 1922; consolidated file XC 2713200). The file itself has not been ordered. Where was he in 1888, that he filed from Massachusetts? [9]
- The date of his promotion. The muster-out roll says "promoted Corpl. Jan 1/65," but every company muster roll carries him as a private through February 1866 and as a corporal from the March–April 1866 roll. The copyist's "65" may be "66." [2]
- Why the stone says "N.Y." [1][2]
- James Grandy (1855–1920) of Elizabeth City, N.C. His death certificate names his father as Isaac Grandy of Camden County and his mother as Mary Dozier. Our Isaac was about eleven in 1855. James is more likely the son of an older Isaac Grandy of the same county, perhaps a kinsman. Not this family until shown otherwise. [19]
- The "13" on Marguerite's birth record. The Providence register numbers her the thirteenth child of the mother. Sarah had reported seven children born by 1910. The count needs checking against the register's practice. [12][13]
- When he was buried in this plot, and the City's ledger entry. The death return says "North Burial Ground." [15]
- Descendants. Peter (1863–1942), John I. (1902–64), Amy O. (1904–68), Ardella F. (1905–86), Paul A. (1909–54), Esther V. (1911–36), Marguerite M. (1916–94). Living descendants are not named on this page. [12][13][14][17][18]
