Headstone of Arthur A. Claus, grave A15

The stone reads

ARTHUR A. CLAUS
Co. [G] 25 Mass. & Co. G 29 Mass.
Died Dec. 10, 1920

Transcription as recorded in the plot register from the photograph; square brackets mark letters not legible or below ground. Photograph by B. Brennan, October 30, 2026. [1] The stone reads 25 Mass., as the survey sheet did; the index card's 35th is therefore the index's reading, not the stone's.

Life

Arthur A. Claus lies in grave A15 of the Prescott Post lot. His stone names his unit as Company G of the 25th & 29th Mass, and gives his death as December 10, 1920. [1]

The National Park Service's index of Civil War soldiers lists Claus, Arthur (also filed as Clouse and Clause), 35th Massachusetts Infantry, Company G, private in and out, with a cross-reference to the 29th Massachusetts; microfilm M544 roll 7. [2] The sheet records "25th & 29th Mass."; the index has him in the 35th and the 29th. Whether the sheet misread 35 as 25 is for the stone to settle.

His service record, any pension file, and his life before and after the war have not yet been researched. This page will grow as the records are read.
